    Hello,
    I just implemented the Silver Lexus theme and pretty much love it. I have one question. Could someone please tell me why my contact forms and such have invisible text areas? My visitors can’t see where to input there information. If you could tell me what part of the css stylesheet I should change, if that’s what I have to change, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks again for the theme. I love it.

    Hi Scott,

    I will change that in the next version of the skin. What’s happening is the style for the skin deals with the default contact form, so if there’s a custom form from another product/plugin, it doesn’t have a style for it.

    what you can do is add

    .ddfmwrap input, .ddfmwrap textarea {padding: 2px; border: 1px solid #ccc; background: #f9f9f9;}

    anywhere in the style.css file, and that should hopefully fix it in your case.

    Hi Trent,

    Woops, I was actually supposed to remove those styles, but happened to forget (I haven’t got apache/mysql installed, so I’m kinda updating the themes by hand at the moment). You can either remove the background: url() bits from the style.css file, or grab the theme again as I’ve removed those 2 images from the style sheet.

    Sorry about that!

    That did it!!! Thanks so much. As far as something getting broke, I wouldn’t know because I wouldn’t know what to look for, but I will keep my eye open.

    On another note. I have a database to allow me to showcase cars (that’s already paid for by the way). You can see it in action at http://www.midgeorgiatruckwanted.com/usedcars . And I have been looking on wordpress.org to find a way to use it with wordpress. I have had no success finding anything to help.

    I would like to know if you know of a way or can it be framed in? Is framing it in a good idea?

    I know that I am pushing it with these questions and may receive a bill soon :-) Please forgive me. I just want to have a very nice site, and people come to car sites to see cars. I want to offer that.

    If we could find a way to implement this database, I would gladly share with the community. However there is a cost for this database, which I can get at a discount because I am a reseller.

    Anyway, let me know. Also, I would like to say that if you need anything let me know. I can’t do alot, but I am here if you need me.

  15. 15 On May 12th, 2007, Scott said:

    Okay Okay!!! I thought about it and think that framing this into a page will probably create issues for my visitors with regard to having to scroll from side to side anyway. What I can do (if someone can help) is just have my header from wordpress be at the top of the page of the database linked pages, so it looks like they are in the site. It will just lack the sidebar information when they are searching for cars. Or is there a way to get that in there?

    Hi Tornebohm,

    You should only need to change the style.css file to change the colours of any of the elements, but I’m not sure which bit you’re referring to. It could be due to a plugin (or using dynamic sidebars), so if you could put up a link to the page, I’ll have a look and let you know which bit to change. Hopefully that should be ok :)

    ———————————

    Hi Ben,

    The digg, reddit buttons should work automatically on posts (as opposed to pages, or the front page). If you go to one of your posts, you should see a list in the upper right hand column. If you wish to change that so it’s available for all pages, if you edit the sidebar.php file, and look for the line

    <?php if (is_single()) { ?>

    if you remove that line

    and then also remove the <?php } ?> line under that block of code (it’ll sit directly under the </dl>), it’ll enable the functionality across all pages.

    I will try to make that sort of thing easier when I get the chance to look at setting up an option page for the themes, but free time is non-existent at the moment :(

    ———————————

    Hi Scott,

    I’ll have a better look when I get the chance, but it might be difficult to implement as the car results page you have is fixed width (so if you put it into an iframe, it’ll cause problems for people with an 800×600 sized browser window). What you may need to do if edit the template page for database, or see if a plugin exists that can list items with pricing, etc.

    Hi Guys!

    Just implemented this theme and I love it but there is a display problem between Firefox 2.0.x and IE 7.x. The theme displays properly in Firefox but I end up with a hierarchical list in the left column when I view the site in IE. In other words, I get

    * Categories
    * Cat 1
    * Cat 2

    While in Firefox it displays (I believe correctly) as

    Category
    * Cat 1
    * Cat 2

    The bullet assigned to the section headings (Categories, etc.) when viewed in IE give an odd look to the column.

    You can look at my blog page at http://www.gemsolv.com/wordpress in both browsers to see the effect.

    The other issue I’m having is that when I go to add widgets sometimes they will display as a _ _ _ _ _ _ (broken line). If you get your mouse pointer right on top of the line, you can activate the widget but obviously this is not how it’s supposed to work. This is a problem in both browsers. Again, any suggestions?

    Finally, you guys need to add a Contact Page – I looked all over the site for one before deciding to use the comment form to post my issues.

    After checking all the usual, i.e. large images etc, I tracked it down to elements related to the comment box.

    If I close comments on a post it display in FireFox and I.E. properly.

    With comments open the sidebars slips. BTW, I had thought it was related to the subscribe to plugin but disabling it didn’t cure it.

    Here is a post with comments open. If you run it thru the W3 validater the errors relate to the comment box area. A couple posts preceding that one the comments are closed for comparison.

    I really love the theme however as it currently operates the difficulty in commenting because the sidebar issue makes it near unusable.

    Hey guys,

    I’ll start from the bottom first!

    hey marc:

    I’ve had a quick look and couldn’t work it out. It seems to be related to the comments box javascript, but I’m not too sure. I’m assuming something in the javascript from that plugin might be setting a margin value on one of the fields, which in turn is shifting the bar over the content. I’ll have a better look later tonight, and see what might be causing it. I admit, it’s a pretty annoying problem!

    ———–

    hey vincent,

    Ahh, you’ve set the image to align left, so the style that controls the comment box is adjusting the contents around the image. To fix it, you can go to the style.css file, and find the line that starts with .boxedup (it’ll be near the top, in the first 20 or so lines). Then just add clear: both; to that style. In the end it’ll look like this.

    .boxedup {background: #fff url(‘images/gradient.png’) top repeat-x; border: 1px solid #eee; padding: 0.5em; margin: 0.5em; clear: both;}

    Hopefully that should fix that!

    ———–

    Hey Scott,

    To change the text color to make it darker, you need to go into the style.css (you were right!), and you’ll need to change the colors of certain styles. The first (and probably most important change) is the one in the body. It’ll be the second line after the commented text, and it’ll start with body {font: 80%/160%

    If you look for the color: in that line, there’ll be a value like #666. You can change that to #333 or #000 which will make it darker. #000 will be black, and #333 with be a darker gray. You should also probably change it for the hyperlinks in the side bars, so if you find the line that starts with a {text-decoration: none;… change that color: value to color: #000. You can play around with the color values to see what you like (in case you don’t like gray), and who knows, you might be a combination that works a lot better!

    ——-

    hey Tom,

    We did have a contact form, but got hit with so much automated spam, figured it was easier to just get rid of it! Sorry about that! I’ll look into the widget support when I’m near a PC. I did some rough testing with widgets when I was building, and with the defaults (and a couple of the main ones) it seemed to be ok, but I didn’t really go much further than that. I’ll make sure to dive in a little deeper, and I’ll get back to you.

    ——-

    hey Robert,

    Is that the about me text that displays in white?

    What you’ll need to do is add

    .about {padding-left: 35px !important; display: block; color: #666;}

    anywhere in the style.css file.

    Then in the sidebar.php, add the ‘about’ class to the li tag of the author bit. Basically just replace that one line with the one below, and then fill out your Author text.

    <li class=”about”><p>A little something about you, the author. Nothing lengthy, just an overview.</p></li>

    I didn’t think anyone would use the about us panel, so forgot to implement the styles for it! Sorry again.

    Thanks for looking, we are generally in the same time zone (Philippines for me) so unless the kids or wife grab the box I should be online later.

    You mention javascript and I remembered the subscribe to comments function I disabled it but it didn’t correct the problem.

    As you probably know others using this theme have not had this problem so it must be something specific to my install.

    And BTW , I noted earlier that on posts with comments closed the problem doesn’t exist that is also true of all the pages as I have comments closed on them.

    The sidebar problem was corrected when I disabled the plugin.

    Now I have to find a similar plugin that doesn’t screw-up the comment box.

    Hi Guys,

    Have you tried the Chip Cuccio’s WordPress plugin – Contact Form ][ - you can find it at http://chip.cuccio.us/projects/contact-form-ii/. It has some anti-spam features and I've yet to get any spam using it.

    Regardless, you need to give people a way to contact you other than through comments. It's not intuitive to use comments to seek a business relationship. Even if you don't use a form, I'd suggest a Contact page with a phone number and an email address. Use the name[at]name.com convention if you’re concerned about email scrapers. Or, form wise, you could implement one of those ‘magic box’ do-hickeys that requires the form filler-outer to enter the code they see to send their message.

    Hey Tom,

    Thanks! I’ll look into that. The other reason we don’t display contact details, etc. is we don’t do web work full time. Basically we’re just 3 friends that have other ‘real’ jobs that pay the bills, put food on the table, etc. I actually drive a forklift in a warehouse for a living, and do the web thing in my own time, but this is out of choice more than anything.

    Eventually, if I ever find the motivation, I’ll get my ass into gear and try to make a career out of it again, but I did that for 10 years (mostly doing flash work for big business) and ended up hating it. I like having a job with no responsibilities (and no clients), so driving a forklift suits me just fine :) I do like designing things though, which is the reason for the WordPress themes (as well as allowing me to learn that kind of thing as I hadn’t used PHP in years), as well as building new sites (for friends mostly) every once in a while.

    The other guys I work with have jobs in web or print related fields, but they have bosses and all that, so having people call them regarding work wouldn’t be looked at too positively by their bosses.

    We have set up the ‘business descriptions’ on the site to look as if we’re doing it full time, but we’ve put enough “we don’t actually do any work” to try and keep people away. It’s strange I know, but I kinda find that sort of thing funny :) It’s the sort of thing that keeps me amused.

    Not sure if that really explains anything (or if just makes us look like losers), but that’s kind of the story at the moment.

    I will put up a contact form when I find time though, cause yeah, it does make sense :)

    With the “Spread the Word” links, you need to be signed up to the service as there’s no way to vote on any of those things anonymously. It makes sense though as it would be a lot easier to cheat that sort of system. It’s mostly there “in case” someone wishes to add it to their del.icio.us bookmarks, rather than copying the URL, and then submitting it manually to their web bookmark provider.

    Hopefully that made some sense :)

    #2 – I have installed Simple Machines Forum on my other site and wanted to know if I could somehow put the header (and sidebars and footers if I am not pushing it) “around” the forum to make it look uniform. It is located at http://dealerism.com/dealer_forum

    Does bad validation effect search engine optimization?

    Hi there,

    I can’t for the life me figure out how to change the color of links within a post. I know it’s in the style.css file but it seems as though your code is structured a little differently than how people are talking about it in the wordpress support forums. I’m sure tons of people have asked you this:) What code to I put in and where? By the way this is a great theme!
    take care,

  46. 46 On May 30th, 2007, Highlands by Design said:

    Hey Justin,

    The links within the post can be changed if you add

    #column1 a {color: #999;}
    #column1 a:hover {color: #666;}

    to anywhere in the style.css stylesheet. You can then change those colours to whatever you want, and it’ll leave the link colours as the gray across the rest of the site, but posts links will be whatever colour you had specified. If you wanted to change all the link colours, you could find

    a {text-decoration: none; color: #999; font-weight: bold; background: transparent;}
    a:hover {text-decoration: underline; color: #666;}

    at around the 6th line of styles in the style.css file. That will change most of the colours across the site except for a few spots (headers, navigation and maybe another couple things).

    Hopefully that helps :)

    —————

    Hey Scott,

    Validation shouldn’t make any difference with how the site ranks. From what I’ve read (it was a post by Vanessa Fox I seem to remember), Google (at least) strips most of the tags out when they index so it just leaves the text. I think the only way it would could hurt is if you forgot to close a tag like so

    <p hey guys, how are you doing? p>

    in which case the bot will probably assume it a tag, and remove it.

    With your cars_for_sale page though, you have the html and head section twice, which might become a problem, but not too sure (I would imagine it wouldn’t be, but who knows!). I’d remove those, starting from the !DOCTYPE down to the div id=”expander” tag of your car template. cause you’re using the sizer and expander ids twice, it’s pushing the sides off the page.

    With the forum, cause it looks like it’s all table based, it’d be a lot of work to restructure to use the same template look. You should check out available templates for Simple Machines, and find one that you think looks alike. You could then just replace a few of the images here and there, and it’ll look a little more uniform. You might be able to wrap the forum in the wordpress template (which will be a lot of copying and pasting), but that’ll cause more problems I think :(

    ——————

    Hey Peter,

    With the side column not extending to 100%, it’ll extend up until the footer ends, and it’ll just stop. I’ve noticed that on a couple sites where footer text is added, and the side bar ends at that point (so it leaves the white space at the bottom). If you move the whole javascript podPressShowPlayers line (including the div and content up one tag (just above the closing </div> right above that line), I think that should fix it. If you moved that line into the footer div, it’ll look better again, so I guess play around with where you move the line to. Because of the way the 3 column thing works, one of the background images in the div will suffer from that sort of problem. I’ll look into it though, there might be some kind of work around.

    Ahh the image thing, haven’t seen that before. I’m not sure if it’ll fix it or not, but if you try to add the following into the style.css somewhere, it should fix it (I hope!)

    #column3 a img {display: block;}

    If it doesn’t work, lemme know and I’ll have a play around to see why it’s doing whatever it’s doing. It looks like it’s floating the image, but that makes no sense.

    Hey yokatta,

    Hmm, I’ll see if I can find a site that has the recent comments feature (it’s not part of the theme, so I’m not sure what the rendered html looks like). I imagine the css to change it might either be in a custom css or javascript file that the plugin might add. Take a look at any other css of js files to see if they have any styles that might make it yellow.

    Hi,

    Most of the problem are solved just moving through the comments. I guess it has already turned into a small “How to”. If you have time and can help me figure out this problem here I am using the NOw reading pluggin and it works perfect but when i click on the book image the whole design and sidebars fall out. Any guess.

    The Silver Lexus theme is a beautiful design.

    I noticed that if I went to a page with the Social bookmarks that my page would get XHTML validation warnings. If you have a post title with a space then this will cause validation warnings. I changed the Delicious anchor as an example and it validates without errors or warnings:

    &url=&” title=”Submit to del.icio.us” rel=”nofollow”>del.icio

    Original:

    &url=” title=”Submit to del.icio.us” rel=”nofollow”>delicious

    My previous post lost the HTML I submitted.

    Briefly I use the “urlencode” function to deal with the spaces in the title.

    This post is an example.

    The “W” and “H” parameters are entered correctly and the css to call the drop shadow is correct. (it works on another blog)

    This is the code (example only) the makes the call in a post with an image…

    Hi Guys,

    I’m wondering if you can help. I have a FeedBurner account and they offer a FeedFlare service which provides more indepth stats but it involves pasting a snippet of code as follows (starting at instruction #4):

    4. Click Main Index Template in the list of template files. Its contents load in the editor. (For WordPress 1.5: “Main Template”)

    5. Paste the code you copied in step 1 just above the line . If you don’t see this code, don’t panic! Just paste the code near the post metadata (author, date, comments, etc) or contact us for help.

    6. Click Update File » to save your changes. View your blog’s home page; you should now see the Flare item(s) you chose at FeedBurner appear beneath every post.

    7. If you also want to have Flare appear on each post’s archive page (recommended), click the Single Post in the list of template files. (WordPress 1.5: “Single Post Template”)

    8. Once again, paste the code from step 2, this time just above .

    9. Click Update File » to save your changes. View any blog item’s individual archive page (the permalink page) to see what you’ve done.

    Of course the problem I have is that the lines of code that they say to paste above are missing from the Silver Lexus template’s code. Can you advise where I should paste this code?

    I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thanks,

    Tom Gray

    Here are the changes to make to change the widget yellow color issues. In the styles.css look for these two entries:

    #column2 {float: left; position: relative; width: 205px; margin-left: -205px; font-size: 0.8em;}
    .container-left {margin-right: 30px; color: #ffc; }

    #column3 {float: right; position: relative; width: 182px; margin-right: -182px; font-size: 0.8em;}
    .container-right {margin-left: 25px; color: #ffc;}

    Change the ffc color to another color otherwise the font will be yellow. Try 000 for black or fff for white.

    hello!

    10x for this theme. I was very happy when found it. The most beateful in it, that it has “rabber” middle part. It’s really great.

    But I discovered some bug in it. When I put some widgets instead of default, some of them break from layout (became wider, then left or right column). May be reason is, that I use russian (Cyrillic) localisation of this theme, downloaded from here:

    Anyway, thanx a lot.

    I am testing the lexus them at my site and i really like it. However, I am wanting to customize the Link and Category Widgets. I want to modify both the order of the categories to suit my needs, as well as how much the child categories get indented.

    Hi
    I am new to WordPress and have been working on a site ( http://www.goldcoastsurf.com.au/ ) using a great theme( http://www.highlandsbydesign.com/theme/silver-lexus-theme/ ) that I have modified a bit.
    I used the instructions from this post ( http://wordpress.org/support/topic/21382?replies=9 ) to remove comments but Im almost certain this is not the problem
    The problem I’m having is that it doesnt display properly in IE5, IE5.5 and IE6 . See screenshots here
    http://browsershots.org/http://goldcoastsurf.com.au/
    and here browsershots.org/…north-shore/
    If you check the screenshots you’ll notice that the right sidebar has dropped but also the icons in the Archive an categories lists/ navigation in the left siebar have appearred twice an or the link is below where vit should be
    Now I know there are 100′s of posts in the forum on this subject and Ive read most of them but I still cant seem to find the problem.
    Most of the posts have the same answer do a search for “sidebar dropped”
    And I realise it has something to do with the widths but I have change everything I can think of and its still no good
    Is there anyone out there who could take a look at it for me an let me know what to look for??
    I know the fix is probably right under my nose. but Im at my wits end an just about ready to abandon it completely Any help greatly appreciate
    Dan
